Immigration: Conflict, Climate, and Consequences

On Thursday, September 28, in the Student Union Building on Purdue’s Hammond campus, the Center for Global Studies hosts a day-long conference on immigration featuring two distinguished keynote speakers at 2 PM: Rahul Oka, Notre Dame Keogh School, Anthropology and Global Affairs associate professor; and Illinois Institute of Technology, Latin American History Professor, Margaret Power.

The conference includes an 11 AM panel on “Immigration Rights and Obstacles,” with Dr. Chiara Galli, University of Chicago, Michael Jimenez, from immigration law firm, Manuel Cardenas & Associates, and Claudia Lucero, Director of the Chicago Religious Leadership Network on Latin America.

Juan M. Andrade, Comprehensive Immigration Reform Now; Jim Mulholland, from Indianapolis immigrant rights group CoCoDa (Companion Community Development Alternatives); and immigration attorney Alfredo Estrada, partner at Burke Costanza & Carberry, will speak at 3:30 on “Ways and Means for Immigration Reform.”

Each session includes time for questions and discussion. Refreshments will be provided, and a community and student information tabling session offers attendees opportunities to speak with organizations working on immigration. Musical entertainment features Carolyn and Pancho Rodea and St. Mary’s Mariachi Youth Band.

At 7 PM, PNW’s Theater Troupe will perform “Ceviche in Pittsburgh,” a play by PNW professor, Dr. Jose Castro-Urioste.
